This document is a technical report of suitability zoning for commercial exploitations of poultry farms (Gallus gallus species) at a national level, scale of 1:000,000, product of a joint effort (Agreement 148 of 2014) between the National Federation of Poultry Farmers (Fenavi), the National Poultry Fund (Fonav) and the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA). These entities decided to join forces in the formulation of guidelines, criteria and public policy instruments to promote productive planning of the poultry chain, within the framework of processes of strengthening planning of efficient use of rural land and land adaptation at a national level carried out by UPRA, aimed at directing investment in the agricultural sector, and the mission of Fenavi, working for the sustainability, growth and competitiveness of the poultry sector.

This guide provides the guidelines, criteria, and tools for conducting, on one hand, the ex-post evaluation of a land improvement program or project, comparing the initial project situation with the conditions of the district now in operation; and, on the other hand, for analyzing the risks, beneficiaries’, and participating institutions' perceptions throughout the entire process, as well as specific evaluations of the social, economic, environmental, and infrastructural impacts on production.

The Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA in Spanish) and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Faculty of Agrarian Sciences (Bogotá Headquarters), developed a methodological proposal for the evaluation of lands for zoning with agricultural purposes at a national level, at a scale of 1:25,000. Following proposed guidelines for land evaluation at this level of detail, the proposed methodology includes identification and analysis of criteria related to biophysical, sociocultural, environmental, economic and technological dimensions, in the territories for which the evaluation is carried out. It incorporates the participation of local actors, organizations, institutions and local government.

Since 2014, the Agricultural Rural Planning Unit (UPRA) has carried out suitability zoning on a general scale in Colombia for forest plantations and for the following commercial crops: rubber, cocoa, oil palm, potato, corn with increasing technology in warm weather, mechanized upland rice, Hass avocado, mango, Tainung papaya, strawberry, MD-2 pineapple, onion bulb, Tabasco pepper, paprika, and Diacol Capiro potato. The following are under construction: cotton and sugar cane for panela, as well as at a scale of 1:25,000 for some forest species in different pilot areas in the country.

As part of agreement 124 of 2013 signed between the Rural Land Planning, Land Adaptation and Agricultural Uses Unit -UPRA- and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Faculty of Agrarian Sciences, Bogotá headquarters, a methodological proposal was developed for the evaluation of lands with agricultural purposes nationwide. The methodology uses a 1:100,000 scale, and includes biophysical, social, economic and environmental criteria.
