What is SIGRA?

SIGRA is the Information System for Agricultural Risk Management.

It is an integrated set of actors, data, technologies and procedures that, interrelated, allow the management of necessary information, in order to generate knowledge in the institutions and actors of the sector and thus be able to support decision-making in the management of risks that affect the agricultural sector. ​

In this section you will find a set of consulting tools that provide information for informed decision making and effective management of financial and market risks in the selected production system.

Initiative led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Finagro and Upra, which involves all entities in the agricultural sector, DANE, IDEAM, production unions and an important participation of international technical cooperation in the agroclimatic component, from the Government of the United Kingdom, through its Prosperity Fund for Colombia and the Development Bank of Latin America, CAF.

Agricultural production is exposed to various risks, however, SIGRA is currently working on agro-climatic, health, market and financial risks.

Prevention
- Adequate targeting of incentives, aimed at mitigating the risks that affect the agricultural sector.
- Identification, analysis, evaluation and monitoring of risk conditions that affect the Colombian Agricultural Sector.
- Reduction in the vulnerability of the agricultural sector to climate change.
- Development of zoning and threat monitoring mechanisms.​

Mitigation
- Planning and development of strategies that mitigate the impact of climatic, natural and production events that affect agricultural systems.

Alert
- Development of models, predictions and indicators for the analysis of information, transforming it into products for different groups.

Preparation
- Promotion of Research, education and knowledge management of Agricultural Insurance in the country and other risk transfer instruments.
- Risk management culture, focused specifically on the country's agricultural and agro-export community from a food security perspective.
- Articulation with Institutions that generate agricultural risk information.

Adaptation
- Strengthening the adaptation and resilience capacities of the productive sector to face extreme climate events caused by climate variability and change, phytosanitary alerts and changing market conditions.

Women have become the axis and driving force of development of risk management and the culture of agricultural insurance in the Colombian countryside. For this reason, the gender and inclusion approach is one of the priorities of the Information System for Agricultural Risk Management, SIGRA, an initiative of the National Government that has important support from international cooperation through the United Kingdom's Prosperity Program in Colombia.​
