In June 2024, the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Division Recorded a 0.3% Increase

The foods with the highest contribution to the price increase in June were potatoes (13.17%), onions (24.1%), and chocolate and chocolate-based products (11.87%).

According to the Consumer Price Index analysis conducted by the Agricultural Rural Planning Unit (UPRA), in June 2024, the food and non-alcoholic beverages division recorded a 0.3% increase compared to May, standing 0.02 percentage points below the national variation of 0.32%. This division was the fourth highest growing in the month.

The foods that most influenced the price increase in June were potatoes (13.17%), onions (24.1%), chocolate and chocolate-based products (11.87%), rice (0.78%), and tree tomato (4.45%). Meanwhile, the foods that most contributed to the price decrease were fresh fruits (-5.92%), tomatoes (-14.94%), blackberries (-10.76%), cheeses and related products (-1.89%), and plantains (-1.21%).

"The data for June 2024 reflects a trend towards price stabilization in the food and non-alcoholic beverages sector. While we have observed increases in certain products, reductions in others show a balance that is crucial for planning and decision-making in our agricultural sector," said Claudia Cortés, director of UPRA.

Year-to-date through June, the food and non-alcoholic beverages division recorded a 3.79% increase, 0.33 percentage points below the national variation of 4.12%, being the seventh division with the lowest variation in the year. This 3.79% variation was 0.26 percentage points higher than the variation recorded in the same month last year, when an increase of 3.53% was observed.

The products that contributed the most to the price increase year-to-date were potatoes (45.49%), fresh fruits (13.9%), fresh vegetables and legumes (17.36%), chocolate and chocolate-based products (31.4%), and tree tomato (63.05%). In contrast, the foods that contributed the most to the price decrease were eggs (-6.33%), tomatoes (-19.47%), edible oils (-5.91%), cassava (-7.95%), and corn and its derivatives (-10.83%).

Annually, in June 2024, the food and non-alcoholic beverages division recorded a 5.27% increase compared to the same month last year, 1.91 percentage points below the national variation of 7.18%, being the sixth division with the lowest variation in this period. This 5.27% variation was 9.04 percentage points lower than the variation recorded in the same month last year, when an annual increase of 14.31% was observed.​
