For Rice Sustainability in Colombia

Por la sostenibilidad arrocera en Colombia

Bogotá, D.C.,(@UPRAColombia, @Claudialili76). Rice is the second most planted crop in Colombia, after coffee, making this cereal a key player in our agriculture. A productive chain that, with any variation, generates significant social, environmental, and economic impacts in our country.

For this reason, planning planting is essential to avoid overproduction and prevent negative impacts on prices and grain oversupply, which can lead to losses affecting all those who depend directly or indirectly on rice.

We present three technical instruments jointly designed by public and private actors in the rice chain, which are important tools for planning:

1. 5th National Rice Census

Its objective is to provide strategic and updated statistical information on mechanized rice-producing units (irrigated and mechanized dryland) and their producers in Colombia for the year 2023 to support decision-making in the economic, social, and environmental areas of the rice sector. Developed by DANE and Fedearroz.

2. Rice Productive Planning Plan (POP) in Colombia 2020-2038

An instrument resulting from a process of strategic planning, both technical and political, formulated participatively with public and private actors for productive chains within the competencies of the Ministry of Agriculture, led by UPRA. It aims to contribute to improving agricultural productivity, food security, competitiveness, and legal security over land ownership, under principles of social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and economic development.

The POP is developed in 3 axes: 1. Productive and market efficiency. 2. Goods and services for the regional specialization of the rice chain. 3. Institution, community, and environment. Additionally, it has a portfolio of 9 programs, 26 projects, and 120 activities.

A product of processes aimed at strengthening rural land use planning and land adjustment at the national level carried out by UPRA, aimed at guiding investment in the agricultural sector. The document contains 6 sections: 1. Background of the sector in terms of its international and national importance, existing zoning, and political and regulatory framework of the chain. 2. Conceptual framework. 3. Methodology of suitability zoning. 4. Zoning results, reflected in the map of suitability for the commercial cultivation of mechanized dryland rice. 5. Conclusions and recommendations. 6. Bibliographic information. Annexes: for each of the criteria and variables used in suitability zoning, methodological sheets are presented describing their importance, qualification ranges, and output maps as support to the methodological process.

We invite you to navigate and explore the Information System for Rural Agricultural Planning (SIPRA) (https://sipra.upra.gov.co/) and make use of the cartographic, spatial, and statistical components.

If we work together in responsibly planning the planting of Colombian rice, we will achieve a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable crop.
