Bogotá D.C., (@Minagricultura, @UPRAColombia, @claudialili76). The Rural Agricultural Planning Unit, UPRA, conducts an analysis of the figures reported by DANE's SIPSA to deliver the Bulletin of Agricultural Product Prices. During February 2024, a significant decrease in prices of key products such as potatoes, eggs, and artisanal cheeses was observed in the main wholesale centers of the country.

Some relevant facts:
  • Specifically, varieties of black potatoes experienced a reduction of over 10% in their prices.
  • A decrease in prices was recorded for all types of eggs, as well as for most artisanal cheeses.
  • The end of harvests and some climatic situations influenced the price increase in fresh fruits and vegetables such as carrots, beets, and beans.
  • Fresh and frozen whole chicken was one of the meat products that decreased the most in price during the last month.

Claudia Cortés, director of the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA), pointed out that "this price behavior is mainly explained by the timing of production cycles and climatic conditions. It is essential to recognize the impact of these factors on the dynamics of the food market."

The reduction of over 10% in the prices of black potato varieties is mainly due to an increased supply in the market. During this period, it is common for producers to harvest large quantities of potatoes, leading to greater availability in the markets and, consequently, a decrease in prices.

The price increase in fruits and vegetables such as carrots, beets, and beans is due to the end of harvests and some adverse climatic situations. The scarcity of supply due to the end of crop seasons, combined with unfavorable weather conditions affecting the quality and quantity of products available in the market, can lead to a price increase.

Products with the greatest variations in February:

  • Those that became cheaper: bell pepper, white onion, pumpkin, green beans in pods, among others.
  • Those that became more expensive: carrots, beets, beans, red onion, beefsteak tomato, among others.

Claudia Cortés reaffirmed the importance of closely monitoring price dynamics in the agricultural sector and assured that UPRA will continue to develop measurement tools to keep Colombians informed.
