In July and August 2024, the two highest food supply records since 2013 were reached.

The food groups with the largest supply increases were fish (12.2%), fruits (9.1%), vegetables (4.7%), meats (3.4%), grains and cereals (2.9%), and tubers, roots, and plantains (1.8%).​


Bogotá D. C., (@Minagricultura, @UPRAColombia, @claudialili76). The Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA) presents the results of food supply monitoring in the country's main wholesale markets for August 2024. Compared to the same month last year, there was a general 4% increase in the supply of food products. This growth reflects the recovery and stability of the food supply chain in the country, as well as the effectiveness of the strategies implemented in the agricultural sector. 


 

In August 2024, the food groups that showed the highest supply increases were fish (12.2%), fruits (9.1%), vegetables (4.7%), meats (3.4%), grains and cereals (2.9%), and tubers, roots, and plantains (1.8%). However, there were decreases in the supply of dairy and eggs (-5.7%) and processed products (-2.7%). 
 
The increase in food supply over the past year demonstrates the joint effort of producers and public policies to strengthen food security in Colombia. We will continue working on improving the interoperability and efficiency of the supply chain to ensure access to fresh and quality food across all regions of the country,” explained Claudia Cortés, director of UPRA. 
 
Among fruits, the products with the highest supply increases were mandarin (47.3%), mango (46.3%), and apple (38.3%), while watermelon (-12%), banana (-11.7%), and other fruits (-1.6%) saw declines. In the tubers group, ginger (34.4%) and plantain (30.2%) led the increase, while potatoes experienced a significant drop (-7.9%). 
 
As for vegetables, onion (22.4%), garlic (20.9%), and cilantro (16.3%) saw notable increases, while corn (-11.7%), carrot (-11.4%), and pumpkin (-9.5%) saw decreases in supply. 
 
Regionally, food supply increased significantly in cities such as Manizales (41.8%), Sincelejo (19.4%), and Tunja (18.1%). On the other hand, Florencia and Popayán recorded decreases: -42.6% and -9.3%, respectively. 
 

Year-to-date performance 

From January to August 2024, the food supply in the main wholesale markets of the country showed a 9.4% growth compared to the same period the previous year. All food groups saw increases in their supply, with grains and cereals (28%), processed products (15.6%), and fish (12.4%) standing out. 
 
Among fruits, apple (31.2%), orange (30%), and lime (24.8%) saw the most significant increases in supply, while mandarin (-10%) and pineapple (-9.2%) saw declines. In the tubers group, plantain supply (39.8%) had the highest increase, while yam (-12.1%) and potatoes (-3.6%) saw declines. For vegetables and legumes, the supply of products like cucumber (14.3​%) and cilantro (13.5%) increased significantly, while corn (-7.5%) and beans (-5.1%) decreased. 
 
By city, Sincelejo (36.6%), Tunja (34.9%), and Medellín (25.7%) saw the largest increases in supply during the year, while Pasto (-14.7%) and Cúcuta (-1.1%) experienced reductions. 
 
For the upcoming months of September and October, we expect a notable supply of products such as sapote, tangelo, peach, pitahaya, granadilla, and others in the fruit category. A good supply of tubers such as plantain, arracacha, cassava, and potatoes, as well as vegetables like broccoli, Swiss chard, and green peas, is also projected,” concluded the UPRA director.​
