The art of aquaculture in Colombia

Colombia, (@UpraColombia, @AUNAPColombia, @Claudialili76) Fishing and aquaculture represent two important sectors of food production for both local consumption and exportation in our country, and they are fundamental for the rural economy, family, and community in Colombia.
"The identification of areas suitable for aquaculture, particularly those intended for fish production for human consumption, was developed through a joint effort between the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA) and the National Fisheries Authority (AUNAP); several species were zoned, including catfish, bocachico, trout, tilapia, cachama, and white shrimp. This exercise aimed to identify regions in Colombia with the greatest potential for these productive practices. Thus, the role of zoning is to guide private sector investments around the prioritized chains with this activity," explained Alexander Rodríguez Romero, Technical Director of Efficient Soil Use and Land Adjustment at UPRA.
In turn, Karen Elena Mejía Piñerez, Director of AUNAP, stated, "Zoning is a tool that allows for the determination of geographic areas where our producers can fully identify where to carry out their productive activities and thus contribute to the improvement of the sector."
Colombia has significant potential for developing aquaculture, thanks to our enormous water resources, both inland and marine, and suitable climate and soil conditions for fish farming.
Renato Baldovino Guevara, Technical Leader of Zoning for Aptitude at UPRA, added, "AUNAP was our ally throughout the process of zoning for aquaculture and fishing. These zoning efforts serve municipalities and departments so they can include them in their planning instruments, for example, in formulating their local development plans, and generate strategies, programs, and projects to support aquaculture and fishing in Colombia."
