These are the differences between food production protection Zones and Areas

UPRA is raising awareness about the process of identifying the APPA in various municipalities across several departments, including Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Tolima, Córdoba, Meta, Santander, and others.

Bogotá, D. C., (@UPRAColombia). With the goal of protecting rural land and ensuring the human right to adequate food, the Unidad de Planificación Rural Agropecuaria (UPRA) is in the process of identifying APPA in over 100 municipalities in departments such as Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Tolima, Córdoba, Meta, Santander, La Guajira, Cauca, and Putumayo.

The identification process includes ongoing discussions with municipal governments and the community to explain the objectives of APPA, the procedures involved, and the various factors that are considered.

As part of the process, food production protection zones are identified; this is a preliminary step before the official identification and declaration of APPA.
Astrid Otero, a member of UPRA’s APPA team, stated, "These zones are not territorial planning determinants and do not have legal supremacy; they are indicative areas where there is an interest in declaring them as APPA."

On the other hand, APPA "are legally binding, territorial planning determinants, and are areas of special interest to protect the human right to food, declared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, based on technical criteria defined by UPRA."

It is important to note that during the initial in-person consultations with the community, the food production protection zones are discussed. Later, UPRA and MinAgricultura present the final results, which include the declaration of APPA.
