Supply in the Main Wholesale Markets of the Country Increased by 8.5% in May

The supply increased for: oranges (32.7%), apples (31.4%), papayas (23.5%), avocados (13.4%), limes (11.8%), tree tomatoes (11.1%), guavas (6.8%), other fruits (6.6%), bananas (4.4%), and watermelons (4%).

According to the Bulletin on Food Supply and Food Security issued by the Unit for Rural Agricultural Planning (UPRA), in May 2024, supply increased by 8.5% compared to May 2023. This increase is distributed across various food groups, reflecting a positive outlook for the agro-food sector.
By food groups, these were the main increases:
Grains and cereals: 49.9%
Fish: 27.7%
Processed foods: 23.8%
Dairy and eggs: 18.9%
Meats: 8.7%
Tubers, roots, and plantains: 5.1%
Fruits: 4.6%
Vegetables: 3.8%
Claudia Cortés, director of UPRA, explained: "The increase in food supply in the main wholesale markets of the country reflects significant progress in our capacity to meet domestic demand. This growth is a positive indicator of the joint work between farmers and the agro-food sector to ensure the availability of essential products for the population."
For each category, the supply was recorded as follows:
Fruits
- Increased: oranges (32.7%), apples (31.4%), papayas (23.5%), avocados (13.4%), limes (11.8%), tree tomatoes (11.1%), guavas (6.8%), other fruits (6.6%), bananas (4.4%), and watermelons (4%).
- Decreased: mandarins (-22.6%), passion fruit (-16.9%), melons (-16%), pineapples (-11.3%), and mangoes (-5.4%).
Tubers, Roots, and Plantains
- Increased: plantains (37.2%), ginger (22%), ulluco (20.8%), arracacha (20.8%), and cassava (20.5%).
- Decreased: yams (-32.7%), other tubers and roots (-6.9%), and potatoes (-5.9%).
Vegetables and Greens
- Increased: beets (19.9%), cabbage (13.1%), bell peppers (12.2%), scallions (10.5%), tomatoes (7.4%), cilantro (6.2%), cucumbers (5.6%), celery (4.4%), other vegetables and greens (4.1%), carrots (2.7%), lettuce (2.2%), and corn (1.8%).
- Decreased: green beans (-7.4%), squash (-5.4%), green peas (-1.9%), and bulb onions (-1.1%).
Supply by City
- Increased: Tibasosa (68%), Medellín (40.3%), Tunja (32.6%), Armenia (27.6%), Sincelejo (25.6%), Barranquilla (22.3%), Manizales (20.6%), Montería (20.1%), Cartagena (19.5%), Valledupar (12.2%), Santa Marta (8.3%), Neiva (6.1%), Pereira (4.2%), Ibagué (3.8%), and Bucaramanga (3%).
- Decreased: Florencia (-31.6%), Ipiales (-18.8%), Pasto (-11.9%), Villavicencio (-7.4%), Cali (-5.1%), Cúcuta (-4.9%), Popayán (-4.2%), and Bogotá (-1.4%).
