Supply in the Country Fell by 2.4% in June at Major Wholesale Markets

The supply of grains and cereals increased by 10.5%, processed foods by 4.3%, and fruits by 4.1% compared to June of the previous year.

Bogotá D.C., (@Minagricultura, @UPRAColombia, @claudialili76). The food supply report for major wholesale markets in the country for June 2024 shows a 2.4% decrease compared to the same month last year. This decline reflects significant variations across different product categories.

The supply of grains and cereals increased by 10.5%; processed foods by 4.3%; fruits by 4.1%; and dairy products and eggs by 2.7%. Meanwhile, decreases were recorded in tubers, roots, and plantains (-10.7%); fish (-4.8%); vegetables and greens (-3.9%); and meats (-0.4%).

"The behavior of food supply in June 2024 reflects a complex and multifactorial dynamic. It is necessary to take these variations into account to ensure efficient planning and equitable distribution of food resources throughout the country," stated Claudia Liliana Cortés, director of UPRA.

In the fruit category, notable increases were seen in apples (64.5%), oranges (28.9%), and avocados (19.5%); while the most significant reductions were recorded for pineapples (-20.8%) and blackberries (-13.3%). In the tubers, roots, and plantains category, there was a notable increase in the supply of ulluco (47.1%) and plantains (21.1%), while potatoes and yams showed the largest decreases: -21.8% and -17.2%, respectively. Vegetables and greens also showed variations, with increases in cilantro (15.5%) and green peas (15.5%), and decreases in corn (-14.6%) and bulb onions (-11.8%).

At the regional level, the cities with the largest increases in supply were Tibasosa (85.1%), Sincelejo (19.9%), and Medellín (16.8%); while the most significant decreases were recorded in Florencia (-40.6%), Cúcuta (-14.2%), and Bogotá (-12.8%).​
