Plantains, Onions, and Potatoes Among the Products That Saw the Biggest Price Decreases in January 2023

The year-on-year variation (January 2023 / January 2024) in the category of food and non-alcoholic beverages was 2.96%, the lowest annual variation in the last 59 months.

The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) revealed that in January of this year, the year-on-year variation of the Consumer Price Index (IPC) for the division of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2.96%, a very different scenario from the first month of 2023 when the increase was 26.18%.
 
According to the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA), the figures corresponding to the annual behavior (January 2023 / January 2024) showed better performance in this period.
 
The division of food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded an increase of 2.96%, placing it 5.39 percentage points below the national variation (8.35%), making it the second division with the lowest variation in this period, as indicated in the UPRA report.

​​​The foods that saw the most significant price decreases, according to their weight in the family basket, were: plantains (-27.06%); onions (-30.05%), potatoes (-18.13%); edible oils (-9.24%); household consumption yucca (-28.96%); dried legumes (-12.28%); tree tomato (-20.11%); corn and its derivatives (-14.39%); tomatoes (-3.71%); and carrots (-10.08%). 

Agricultural inputs decreased in price by 31% during 2023. 
 
The agricultural input price index closed with a positive balance for Colombian farmers, as these products saw a 31% decrease in their prices during 2023. This was revealed in the latest bulletin prepared by the UPRA, which records the annual price behavior of fertilizers, pesticides, other inputs, and animal feed.

On the other hand, the animal feed price index in 2023 recorded a decrease of -9.44%, a very positive figure compared to the increase of 30.67% reported in 2022.
