Ícono Calendario 8/16/2024 Agricultural Sector Exports Reach USD 904 Million, with a 9.4% Increase in Value

Bogotá D.C., (@Minagricultura, @UPRAColombia, @claudialili76). The Colombian agricultural and agro-industrial sector closed June 2024 with encouraging export figures, reaching a total value of USD 904 million, representing a 9.4% increase compared to the same month in 2023. This positive trend is primarily attributed to the significant rise in coffee, flower, and cocoa exports, which showed strong growth in value.
Specifically, coffee exports in June amounted to USD 60.1 million, reflecting a 26.8% increase compared to the same month last year. Flowers, one of the flagship products of Colombian agribusiness, also showed a notable increase of 17.3%, with a value of USD 29.8 million. Additionally, cocoa and its preparations experienced a remarkable growth of 78.7%, reaching USD 9.2 million.
The semi-annual balance from January to June 2024 reported a total export value of USD 5.582 billion, representing a 7.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is largely due to the expansion of banana exports, which saw an increase of USD 261.0 million (62.7%), followed by flowers with USD 139.7 million (12.4%) and cocoa and its preparations with USD 63.0 million (109.4%).
“The sustained growth in exports of key products such as coffee, flowers, and cocoa reflects the effort and resilience of our producers in a competitive global market. At UPRA, we continue to work on planning and strengthening the production chains to ensure that this dynamism translates into sustainable economic development for the country. The quality of our products is recognized worldwide, and it is essential that we continue to open doors in new international markets,” explained Claudia Cortés, director of the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit, UPRA.
However, over the last 12 months (July 2023 to June 2024), export values experienced a slight decrease of 1.3% compared to the same period the previous year, highlighting the volatility of the international market and the challenges facing the sector.
Exports by volume
In terms of volume, the country exported 422,443 tons of agricultural and agro-industrial products in June 2024, representing an 8.2% decrease compared to June 2023. This reduction was mainly influenced by the drop in banana exports (-21.5%), live cattle (-39.4%), and bakery and pastry products (-37.3%).
Nevertheless, the year-to-date performance (January-June) showed a 17.9% increase in volume compared to the same period last year. This growth is explained by the increase in banana exports (60.4%), coffee (14.5%), and Tahitian lime (58.0%).
In the analysis of the last 12 months, the export volume grew by 6.4% compared to the same period the previous year, consolidating the positive trend in terms of quantity exported, despite the slight decrease in value.
