
Fresh fruits and vegetables, the major influencers in the variation of the CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages in February

The division of food and non-alcoholic beverages recorded an increase of 0.54% compared to the previous month, positioning 0.55 percentage points below the national CPI average.
In comparison with February of the previous year, there was an increase of 1.89% in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages. This annual variation is the lowest in the last 62 months.

The Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA) presents an analysis of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) provided by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE). It was evidenced that in February 2024, the division of food and non-alcoholic beverages experienced an increase of 0.54% compared to the previous month. This variation positioned itself 0.55 percentage points below the national CPI average, consolidating as the fifth division with the lowest variation during the month.
In comparison with February of the previous year, this monthly variation was 1.06 percentage points lower, when an increase of 1.6% was recorded. Among the foods that contributed the most to the price increase are: fresh fruits (6.65%), fresh vegetables and legumes (3.83%), tomatoes (6.49%), rice (1.02%), and carrots (17.93%). On the other hand, the foods that experienced a decrease in prices were eggs (-2.2%), bananas (-4.82%), potatoes (-3.5%), onions (-4.75%), and edible oils (-1.8%).
"The behavior of the CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages in February reflects both seasonal dynamics and structural factors that impact the prices of agricultural products. It is crucial to continue monitoring these indicators to understand trends and make informed decisions regarding economic matters and public policies," stated Claudia Cortés, director of UPRA.
Regarding the annual variation, in February 2024, the division of food and non-alcoholic beverages showed an increase of 1.89%, compared to the same month of the previous year. This figure is 5.85 percentage points below the national variation, becoming the second division with the lowest variation in this period.
Meanwhile, the foods that experienced a reduction in prices in February 2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, were bananas (-33.4%), onions (-32.37%), potatoes (-19.62%), edible oils (-11.92%), and dry legumes (-13.64%).
