In February, agricultural sector imports increased by 4.7% compared to the same month in 2023

The Unit of Agricultural Rural Planning (UPRA) provides the analysis of agricultural sector imports for February 2024, highlighting an increase in import value compared to the same month of the previous year. Sector imports in February 2024 had a value of USD 749 million CIF, showing an increase of 4.7% compared to February 2023. This behavior is mainly explained by the increase in imports of soybean cake, by USD 26.2 million (67.3%); ethyl alcohol, by USD 16.9 million (119.1%); and soybean oil, by USD 14.3 million (84.3%).
Claudia Cortés, director of UPRA, stated, "The figures of agricultural sector imports reflect a changing economic dynamic, where we see growth in products such as soybean cake and ethyl alcohol, while other products such as corn and milk show a significant decrease. These data are fundamental for the formulation of public policies that promote the sustainability of agricultural activity and the economic well-being of our farmers."
Regarding volume, sector imports in February 2024 reached 1,145,088 tons, showing an increase of 9.7% compared to February 2023. This behavior is mainly explained by the increase in imports of soybean cake, by 59,363 tons (90%); ethyl alcohol, by 24,315 tons (150.3%); and soybean oil, by 20,487 tons (156.8%).
For the cumulative period of January and February, import volume reached 2,327,506 tons, registering an increase of 5.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. This variation is mainly due to the increase in imports of wheat, by 106,439 tons (48.2%); ethyl alcohol, by 48,546 tons (192.6%); and soybean oil, by 19,781 tons (58.6%).
Trade balance February 2024
The trade balance, in value for the period of January-February 2024, showed a surplus of USD 390 million FOB; a figure that represents an increase of 164.7% compared to the surplus recorded in February 2023.
