
During January, the supply in the main supply centers increased by 19.7%

In January 2024, 613,872 tons of food entered the country's main wholesale centers. Comparing this volume with the same month of the previous year, it is observed that the food supply recorded an increase of 19.7%

The Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA) issued the supply bulletin for agricultural products and food security for January 2024, which showed an increase of 19.7% in the food supply in the country's main marketplaces compared to the same period of the previous year. This increase, totaling 613,872 tons of food entered into the country's main wholesale centers, reflects the continued commitment of the agricultural sector to national food security.
"This increase in supply covers a wide range of food groups, reflecting a positive trend in the availability of agricultural and livestock products nationwide. It reflects the hard work of our producers and distributors to ensure the availability of food throughout the country," said Claudia Cortés, director of UPRA.
Analyzing the volume entering the cities where the country's main wholesale markets are located, it was observed that the food supply increased in January 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year in the cities of Tunja (102.3%), Sincelejo (100.4%), and Medellín (54%).
Fruits
The supply of fruits recorded significant increases during January 2024. Highlights include a 69.7% increase in oranges, a 49.2% increase in naranjilla, and a 39.8% increase in tree tomato. In total, 141,748 tons of fruits entered the country's main wholesale centers.
Tubers, Roots, and Plantains
The supply of tubers, roots, and plantains also experienced a notable growth during January 2024. Plantains led the increase with 56.1%, followed by arracacha with 34.9%. In total, 178,955 tons of these foods entered the wholesale centers.
Vegetables
Vegetables registered increases in their supply during January 2024. Highlights include a 25% increase in cucumber, a 20.8% increase in tomato, and an 18.6% increase in bell pepper. In total, 169,253 tons of vegetables entered the country's main wholesale centers.
