Colombia to Implement an Agroecology Policy

Colombia to Implement an Agroecology Policy

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MinAgricultura), with the support of UPRA, is in the process of formulating an agroecology policy.

Bogotá, D. C., (@UPRAColombia). During the UPRA Classroom Workshop, Juliana Sabogal, a member of the Agricultural, Ethnic, Family, and Community Farming team at UPRA, announced, "The Agroecology Policy is set to be signed and is about to be issued, having gone through all the necessary steps.

MinAgricultura, along with entities such as UPRA, has emphasized the importance of agroecology, focusing on integrating Agricultural, Family, Ethnic, and Community farming with the conservation of nature.

According to Sabogal, agroecology operates in three main areas: academia, productive and organizational practices, and the political arena. As a science, agroecology studies the interactions between different components of the agroecosystem and the food system, including functions, relationships, biological designs, and ecological, social, cultural, economic, and political factors.

In practice, agroecology brings together production and organizational methods that aim to develop sustainable agri-food systems. It uses both local, traditional knowledge and modern science to achieve this goal.

In the social movement context, the Agroecology Policy is driving the transformation of the current food system into one that guarantees the human right to adequate food and harmonizes with the environment. Additionally, it promotes social justice, reinforces identity and culture, and enhances the economic viability of rural areas.

Agroecology in Colombia

Sabogal mentioned that "in Colombia, agroecology has been part of social processes for about five decades. This experience is now being recognized as the foundation for constructing the corresponding public policy."

She also highlighted that anyone interested in learning more about agroecology can explore a mapping of collective agroecological initiatives created by MinAgricultura. This mapping was developed during 2020 as part of the "Sembrando Capacidades" project and was updated in 2023 and 2024.
