In August, food supply increased in the country's main wholesale market
In August 2024, the main wholesale markets in the country received a total of 621,543 tons of food, representing a 4% increase compared to the same month last year.

Bogotá D. C., (@Minagricultura, @UPRAColombia, @dorairey). In August 2024, the main wholesale markets in the country received a total of 621,543 tons of food, marking a 4% increase compared to the same month last year, according to the Agricultural Products Supply and Food Security Bulletin from the Agricultural Rural Planning Unit (UPRA). This increase reflects improved availability in several food categories, driven by the agricultural sector's dynamism and efficient distribution.

Among the most notable increases were fish, with a 12.2% rise, and fruits at 9.1%, followed by vegetables (4.7%), meats (3.4%), grains and cereals (2.9%), and tubers, roots, and plantains (1.8%). On the other hand, there were decreases in the supply of some food groups: dairy and eggs saw a 5.7% drop, and processed foods fell by 2.7%.

Dora Inés Rey Martínez, UPRA's director, commented on the results: "This increase in supply demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of Colombian agricultural producers in the face of market challenges. We are seeing a greater supply of fresh products such as fish, fruits, and vegetables, which translates into improved conditions for the country’s food security.

Performance in Major Cities

Food supply varied significantly across major cities. The most significant increases were recorded in Manizales (41.8%), Sincelejo (19.4%), and Tunja (18.1%). However, some cities experienced decreases in volume, such as Florencia (-42.6%) and Popayán (-9.3%).

  • Bogotá: The total food supply reached 208,552 tons, a 0.9% increase compared to last year. Fish showed the largest increase, at 51.8%.
  • Medellín: With 104,421 tons received, supply increased by 7.2%. Fruits saw a 30.7% rise, while vegetables grew by 21.4%.
  • Barranquilla: The city received 48,977 tons, a 6.8% growth. Fish recorded an impressive 107.2% increase, followed by meats at 73.1%.
  • Cali: Despite a slight 0.7% decrease in total food supply, vegetables saw a significant rise of 15.6%.
The report confirms stability in the supply of essential foods across the country, though the variation in supply levels highlights the need to continue strengthening planning and logistics in both rural and urban areas.
