The APPA bet on protecting rural land in Andes and six other municipalities in southwestern Antioquia

The APPA bet on protecting rural land in Andes and six other municipalities in southwestern Antioquia

The APPA are being identified in 22 municipalities in Southwestern Antioquia.

Bogotá, D. C., (@UPRAColombia, @claudialili76). To present the progress in identifying the Food Production Protection Areas (APPA) in seven municipalities in southwestern Antioquia, the Rural Agricultural Planning Unit (UPRA) held a meeting attended by over 60 community representatives.

The socialization included participation from social leaders, producers' representatives, and various stakeholders from municipalities such as Andes, Jardín, Betania, Hispania, Ciudad Bolívar, Salgar, and Tarso, who learned about the process UPRA is undertaking to identify the APPAs.

It is important to mention that APPAs are areas of rural land with suitable conditions for food production. They are a priority for the State and must be protected, considering that this significantly contributes to fulfilling the human right to adequate food.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MinAgricultura) — the entity responsible for declaring APPAs — and UPRA — the entity providing technical support for their identification — aim, through this policy, to protect and prevent the loss of land for food production, promote the efficient use of rural agricultural land and water resources, and foster rural development to guarantee the human right to food.

During the socialization held at the Mario Aramburo Educational Citadel in Andes (Antioquia), producers emphasized the importance of APPAs in protecting rural land from activities that threaten the environment or food production.

Luisa Fernanda Jaramillo, a representative of the Environmental Committee of Hispania (Antioquia), commented: "It is important to know what the National Government has planned for agrarian reform, how they will manage the food reserve, and what is planned for our territory."

MinAgricultura and UPRA will continue identifying APPAs in 22 municipalities in Southwestern Antioquia in the coming weeks and will hold new meetings to present the results of this process.
